THE HUDSON RIVER PAGEANT - SATURDAY MAY 12
A community based ecological art and performance project to restore the native species and habitats of the Hudson River and address climate change.
The project engages the participation of artists, youth, local residents, schools, community centers, and organizations to participate in the project and our three month educational environmental art workshop series from March –May. Participants work with our resident artists to create the spectacular puppets and costumes for the parade. The culminating parade and theatrical pageant follows a route from Battery Park North to Gansevoort Street, in the downtown portion of the Hudson River Park, on Saturday May 12, 2012 (rain date Sunday May 13), from 1-5pm. The parade of spectacular costumes, giant puppets, mobile sculptures, and live musical bands, features 13 site-specific performances at the piers and significant sites along the route. Featured presentations of performance, poems, songs, and dance, celebrate the history, current issues, and future restoration of the river including: Dance of the River Grass, Oyster Planting, Live Fish Release, and Boat Dance.

MAKING THIS FILM WAS A VERY FUN EXPERIENCE.

Going to Zuccotti Park slash Liberty Plaza Park on Wednesday was a wonderful experience for me. I was refreshed by the sense of community and the sense of pure dignity that people there possessed. I am certain that I will go back on Monday to participate further. I do not know exactly why I went there in the first place but I know that it was good. There are people there with specific political messages, but I am not one of those. I was there to contribute my energy.

I will not go to Occupy Wall Street and try to expound on politics or economics, leaning precariously on what frail tidbits I know about the tax code and the bailouts and the tea party to support me as a cogent revolutionary leader or organizer. I am an artist and my role is not to try to proclaim new economic plans. I do not understand money and I do not care for it. I would contend that nobody on either side of a political debate can with certainty speak about what happens to the money inside of all those vast white and gray buildings down there. So I'm not going to point fingers. I love everybody. I am going to Occupy Wall Street because it is enjoyable and people there are cool. I am going because it is the place in New York City right now where people are playing drums and dancing in the street and making art about more important things than money squabbles, such as ending all war and loving all humans. That is the message. Love is the message.

I have participated in a good number of great projects this summer. As a result I have a bunch of online work to do to bring it all to the world.

Directed the Hudson River Pageant piece again this year, still have to post a video of it and/or quality pictures!

Henry Hudson and the Myth of the Crying Clouds

At 2:50 pm on Saturday May 21st The New York City Street Players will be performing an original environmental theatrical piece on the deck of the Queen of Hearts Steamboat! Just south of Christopher Street in Hudson River Park, as a part of the Hudson River Pageant. Please come out to support!

The piece is written/directed by Drew Vanderburg and will feature music from members of the Rude Mechanical Orchestra. It marks the 400th anniversary of the mutiny of Hudson's crew and his subsequential abandonment on a boat-cast-adrift in the Hudson Bay. He was never seen or heard from again. The 5-minute-play's story is that he in fact lived a long happy life with Native Americans and fell in love with the land that he discovered. He dies at the source of the Hudson River, Lake Tear of the Clouds. The clouds cry for his death and the flow of their tears creates the river.

Albeit unusual for him to speak English in his videos, radical Islamic terrorlord Osama Bin Laden has recently released new footage in which he uses the popular art known as music to reach out to western audiences.

The legitimacy of Mr. Bin Laden's videos is often contested by pundits on America's left and right wings and abroad. This is in part due to the often anonymous sources of these videos, which generally originate from within Al Qaeda's disorganized desert network of VCRs and dial-up modems. Authenticity is even harder to prove if one does not speak Arabic. However, the fact that Mr. Bin Laden is speaking, nay singing, in English in this video proves conclusively that it is legit.

"The Rope in Your Hands" is an ethnographic illustration of life after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, LA.

With text taken directly from interviews in New Orleans, playwright Siobhan O'Loughlin performs as 13 different survivors telling their stories as they were told to her. The characters (ranging in age from 7 to 65 years old, and with a diverse background of race and ethnicity) engage the audience in a personal journey of honesty, courage, and the endurance of the human spirit.

Scoville is doing the project as part of the Public Domain Series being produced by The Tank and Full Circle Theater Company. 6 directors were paired up with 6 plays in the public domain based on web-audience voting.

Mattroi Berger's 52 Week Song Cycle

In a brusque reiteration of the music-creation saga that is his life in NYC, Mattroi Berger has just released the 40th song in his 52 week/song long recording project. Mattroi has not let anything derail him from the quest for musical machismo. Despite the breakup of his band The Hey! in the fall of last year, Berger has persisted in blasting Manhattan with tasty jams. He now has a new band called Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, and also plays with The Licks.

Mattroi has a blog that documents his yearlong music writing project, the conceit of which is to write, record, and post one song a week for the listening enjoyment of, well, the world. I think this week's song is particularly great.

Angels and Accordions

Today, through cool breeze and diagonal orange sunshine, I rode my bike down to Greenwood Cemetery for a site-specific performance art piece. My girlfriend, Ellie Famutimi, was the costume manager for the piece, which is how I found out about it.

30 beautiful angels and ten spooky accordion players transported a crowd of hundreds through time and space, leading us around the massive cemetery and evoking images of past, present, and future. They danced, played music (accordion and violin), sang (haunting, precious songs like Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot), and draped their bodies upon the architecture of the tombs, headstones, hillsides, and trees. I learned a lot about the history of the cemetery and just generally felt magical. Andrew Butler was a suspiciously spooky chaperone of the crowd with a black and white umbrella and dour disposition. Friends,

I have reached July, we all have, and life has progressed thoroughly into the summer. Today is the strike for Ideal, the show that I just finished producing at 59E59, and today is the hottest day of the year so far.

I'm done with theater until the fall. I need some time to play music and just be calm and focus on my interior self. So don't expect much from this blog in the next few months. Since January I have been balls to the wall with theater; directing one, producing one, lighting two, curating one, and generally helping with a million. I need a break.

Hope you all had a great independence day. I went to the beach at Rockaway Park and then watched the fireworks from my fire escape.

A great example of ART FOR HUMANITY that I have coming up is IDEAL.

IDEAL is a play by Ayn Rand , enjoying its NYC premiere in America's Off-Broadway Theater Festival this June. It is the first Off-Broadway venture by my theater company, Fresh Ground Pepper. I am a Co-Producer of this piece of theater, directed by my colleague Jenny Beth Snyder. The play runs from June 17th to July 3rd and is really going to be epic.

It's about a beautiful Hollywood starlet who is accused of murder. She roots through her fan mail and finds six sincere letters from six individuals. Each individual is a different archetype from Great Depression America. She confronts each individual seeking help and, when they fail her, throws a mirror up to them, exposing the constant hypocrisy of America's belief systems. Can she find a person who really lives according to his or her beliefs?

I am lucky, because Avery has decided, now that he works at the Apple store, that he is giving me his laptop. Now he has a 27 inch desktop screen. So now he has given me his laptop. So now it is mine, and thus it is all of yours because, my dear readers, I am yours.

Here are my basic to approximate plans for the coming months:

MAY - I am about to push four shows out of my birth canal at once. They are in chronological order, as events tend to be, and they are as follows. 1.) FGP MUSIC! On May 14th I've booked a bunch of musical acts to celebrate music in midtown and explore its relationship to performance. 2.) The Libertine. A piece I'm light designing in the Chernuchin theater, with very high ceilings, where Urinetown first came out of, in the coming week. 3.) Fulton's Fanfare! On May 22nd I will be performing a small street theater piece on the bow of the Queen of Hearts steamship, for environmental awareness. 4.) Ideal. This show actually opens in June, but it is in the next few weeks that I need to raise some funds for that or else danger lurks. Donations are tax-deductable baby! I will make a more advertizual post about those shows in a bit. For the next three weeks I am just going to be working on these shows. Then voila. While my personal goal for May was to start recording at Spaceman Sound, that project will have to wait until...

JUNE - In this month I will have only one show left to open and I can start recording the record. I am looking forward to playing a lot more music this summer inside and outside of a studio. In June I hope to still be working as a camera operator at the Guggenheim. In June I'll finish my afterschool program for the summer, do a summer camp, do a summer summer summer. (I'll be in NYC teaching at the Little Red School House.)

HUDSON RIVER PAGEANT MAY 22ND

This was one of my favorite projects last year. It's an ecological-awareness-raising costume parade on Manhattan's West Side. Below are pictures from 2009's parade.

This year's pageant is MAY 22nd! I will be helping on costume and puppetry workshops at the World Financial Center on Saturdays from 2 to 4. I am also directing a piece in the parade that will be called Fulton's Fanfare. It's about Robert Fulton and Henry Hudson and the history, satirically, of the Hudson river, featuring The New York City Street Players. More to come on all this...

I had a great vacation just a moment ago and now I'm back here in Brooklyn. I have no intention of leaving NYC again for quite some time. Perhaps until the summer. This is very exciting. I am going to work and have money. I am going to kick your ass.

Dear America,

Hello to all. I am pleased to be back in New York City after a pleasurable apprenticeship at the Bread and Puppet Theater Company. They have a 400 acre farm/homestead in Glover, Vermont. There is a Dirt-Floor Theater and Paper-Mache Cathedral. There is a huge self-amplifying grassy gravel pit in a huge glorious field. They were active in the counter-culture movement and protested all the way until right now. There is a lot there. Campfires, Clarinet, Clowning.

I feel reinvigorated. My life in New York City is awesome and it is made for me. I made it, obviously. I am constantly hunting for financial resources to continue and expand my artwork, and stay in my apartment. I will be doing many SHOWS now. SHOW. The newest show on the radar is The Office and the Metal Blob. It's being done in the Fringe by my closest theatrical allies, The Centrifuge, although I haven't been involved directly because I was in Vermont. It promises wackiness, sci-fi, and rocking music.

I am also trying to get NYC's stamina up for the 2009 HOWL! Festival on September 4, 5, and 6. I plan to perform and hock Cheap Art at this festival, in honor of Ginsberg and his cats. Come HOWL with us....more to come...SHOWS.

The Hudson River Pageant is a yearly environmental awareness raising parade on the lower west side of Manhattan. This year was its first year and I was a parade marshall. It was great fun and very beautiful. We released oysters and fish into the river and wore awesome costumes.

Hello friends and fellow artists,

While you may still be frolicking down the artistic avenues that have been spread wide by the last Fresh Ground Pepper, there is no time to delay! I have begun to organize the June Fresh Ground Pepper, and I need YOU to submit YOUR ideas!

(For those of you who don’t know, Fresh Ground Pepper is a monthly development series for new theatrical work. It’s produced by The Centrifuge and it aims to give artists a safe, free space to share raw, in-progress, volatile, and thoroughly original work with a raucous audience of your friends and peers.)

The theme of the June Fresh Ground Pepper is OUTDOORS. The city is our stage. I’m looking at it as less of a showcase or workshop and more of an event; perhaps a happening. The event will be on June 5th, 2009, in the early evening before the sun sets. That’s all I know so far. The nature of the event and its logistics – and most importantly its location(s)—will be determined by the proposals that you guys submit. I encourage you to think big. Anything from site-specific body-sculpture to clowning, from guerilla subway-car parties to dance pieces in that East River Park amphitheater, from tag games to picnics, from busking in Tompkins Square to streaking in Times Square. The key to impactful outdoor performance in New York City is to challenge the architecture and/or audience that comes with the location you choose. We must not be afraid to turn heads; in fact, that must be our goal!

As with all the other FGP’s, there is a proposal submission process. It is possible, especially if we have a street parade or something, to include dozens of acts in this event. However, in order to create a cohesive evening, we may have to give preference to some acts over others. To submit, please send an e-mail to thecentrifugeny@gmail.com that answers the following questions:

1.) What is your idea?
2.) What is your ideal location to stage said idea?
3.) How will your event/performance engage with the location?
4.) How will your event/performance engage with the audience?
5.) What materials does your idea require?

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

SOUND: Nothing commands attention in this loud urban cacophonofunnyfarm like music. However, amplified sound is difficult to accommodate since most outdoor spots have no electricity. Please let me know if you might want to incorporate battery-powered boomboxes and/or musical instruments. At least think on what your piece sounds like and how it will be heard.

COMPETITION: Some locations in NYC are notoriously tourist-heavy and thus attract the most professional street performance acts. Beware that at 7pm on a Friday night Union Square, for example, will have break-dancers and sword-swallowers. Any event that we stage there will also, whether we like it or not, engage with these performers and their crowds.

PARADE: Maximum flexibility will be afforded if the FGP audience (and of course any passers-by who feel like a fun time) can be led from location to location. If you want to be involved in this FGP but don’t have a specific idea for a performance, then perhaps you could help with the journey between performances! We’re going to need people to wave some flags and blow some horns.

An Evening of Rock through Film and Music.

On September 25th at 7pm, you are invited to New York City's Gene Frankel Theater to celebrate the new film ROCKUMENTARY. The short movie documents the 2007 Paul Green School of Rock Music Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It features interviews with Ween, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Greg Attonito of the Bouncing Souls, Eric Svalgard, and a ton of SOR kids and alumni. The film was created by Drew Vanderburg, Matt Gliva, and Kate Freer. This event marks the world premiere of the movie on the big silver screen!

Also performing that night before the film screening will be School of Rock alumni band El Fuego. El Fuego's frontman, Joe Reno, is a former SOR student who now teaches at the school and is featured in the film. Get ready for them to blast you with some vicious ROCK before we turn down the lights and break out the popcorn. There will also be drinks available!

So come out for this one-of-a-kind premiere party event. It's brought to you by The Paul Green School of Rock, The Gene Frankel Theater, and Room 404 Media. It's $10 at the door, but School of Rock kids get in for free! The Gene Frankel is located at 24 Bond St. between Lafayette and Bowery. ROCKUMENTARY is finished. It's 36 minutes long, plus some badass DVD extras. There shall be a screening of the film at my apartment on Saturday July 19th at 9pm. I am excited and I think it turned out well. I hope that soon you will be able to buy DVD's of it for $15 from the merchandise page of the Paul Green School of Rock website. Until then you can buy it straight from me for the price of your choice, the price of my choice being $10.

This summer I am working at the Little Red School House Summer Camp. There is a great blog showing photographs and movies of what we do there. It is extremely fun, I started Monday and have really dug in. I should really be asleep now because it starts early. So goodnight.
